About psychomotor therapy (PMT)
What is psychomotor therapy?
Psychomotor therapy (PMT) is a form of therapy that views the body and mind as one whole. Instead of just talking about your problems, in PMT you actively work with your body to reduce mental health problems. Through PMT, you learn to become more aware of your own body: the way you move, how you experience your body, your body language, the tension in your body, and how your thoughts, feelings, and behavior influence each other.
Through various exercises (such as sports and games, relaxation exercises, body-oriented techniques, and breathing exercises), you learn to better recognize and understand your own body signals, feelings, and behavior.
What is the goal of psychomotor therapy?
The main goal of psychomotor therapy is to eliminate or reduce the problems you are experiencing. By actively working with your body, you can discover new and different ways to better cope with your problems or emotions such as anxiety, anger, gloom or depression. This can help you function better in daily life.
For which mental issues can PMT help?
Physical and mental health issues often occur together, as body and mind are interconnected. If you suffer from mental issues, this can also manifest as physical problems and tension, such as headaches, sleep problems, fatigue, lethargy, muscle pain, dizziness, etc. PMT therefore also looks at somatic aspects.
PMT can be effective for a wide range of mental health issues and problems, such as:
- anxiety disorders;
- depression;
- trauma-related disorders;
- stress and burnout;
- insecurity and low self-esteem;
- aggression problems;
- problems in (physical) contact with others.
PMT can contribute to improving your physical and mental well-being, including:
- learning to cope better with emotions and tension;
- reducing physical tension and stress;
- developing a more positive self-image and increasing self-confidence;
- exercises that can improve body coordination, strength, and body awareness;
- active exercises can improve your general physical condition;
- physical activity can help reduce feelings of anxiety, gloom and depression.
Psychomotor therapy is always initiated in consultation and as a supplement for the conversations you are already having with your therapist. In combination, PMT contributes to a better balance between body and mind, which can help reduce or eliminate your problems.
