About system therapy
Why system therapy?
System therapy is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on relationships between people. A system means: everything that forms an important part of your living environment, like family, school, circle of friends, work, etc. In everyone’s living environment, people influence each other: thoughts, feelings, expectations and behaviors arise in interaction with others in the environment. This is a complex process where misunderstandings and problems can arise: partners can argue about conflicting wishes and desires, a child can develop school anxiety after divorce from parents or a family struggles with the illness or mental health issues of a family member.
Focus system therapist
A system therapist focuses on the way people interact and communicate, but also on the possible influence of environmental factors such as school, work, neighborhood, religion and culture. Often there are also patterns that can be repeated over the generations. Together we investigate your symptoms or problems and when it makes sense for the treatment, important people of your system can be invited to the sessions. Not the search for causes is central, but the search for possibilities.
In the sessions we may focus on changing the way you interact with each other or changing the way you view the problem. A system therapist not only considers problems, but also has an eye for the resilience of a system and stimulates you in finding your own solutions.
Added value of system therapy
System therapy combines forces. Not only you make an effort for a desired change, your environment also participate in it. Contrary to popular belief, relatives are more likely to be involved in treatment. It also appears that people get out of trouble earlier with a therapy that focuses on the entire context in which you live.
Early system treatment can limit the impact for family members and often prevent them from developing problems. System therapy can prevent families or parts of families from getting (further) out of balance.
Relationship and family therapy
Relationship and family therapy are the best known forms of system therapy. All the relatives are involved almost from the beginning of the treatment and we try to grow towards a better way of interaction with each other. But, for example, parental guidance or individual system therapy is also possible.
