When and why family therapy?
Every family is unique in terms of composition, characters, but also in terms of agreements, habits and relationships. After a divorce or the death of one of the family members, every family is disrupted and a new balance must be found. Also if one of the family members suffers from a problem (psychological issues, an addiction or, problems with mourning processing, or a serious physical illness), this can have an effect on the rest of the family. It is then quite normal if there is tension or disagreement now and then. But if the problems are too serious or complex or take too long, and it is not possible to restore the balance on your own, then family therapy can help.
Effectiveness of family therapy
In family therapy, all family members (parents and children) are often involved in the therapy from the very beginning. During family therapy, we examine how family members respond to each other and what the underlying reasons are for those reactions and behaviors. It is important to improve communication between family members during family therapy.
The ultimate goal is to promote mutual understanding and strengthen the connection between family members, thereby improving the atmosphere. Because all involved family members are supported and you can therefore rely on important loved ones, recovery takes place faster and there is less chance of relapse. This improves the efficiency of the treatment.
Family therapy often uses system therapy, but a combination of system therapy with individual therapy is also possible.
