About gloom
Are you unable to enjoy life? Do you feel tired and down? Everyone feels gloomy or sad sometimes, for example after a disappointment, a difficult event or a loss. This is a normal reaction and usually the feeling disappears after some time, especially once the situation has been processed.
You may also feel gloomy when you are dealing with many worries or problems. For example difficulties at work, problems in your relationship or family, concerns about your health or financial stress.
Difference between gloom and depression
When a gloomy mood lasts for weeks and you no longer feel like doing anything, or when you lose interest in your normal daily activities, the gloom can gradually develop into a depression. The difference between gloom and depression can sometimes be difficult to determine, but it is mainly related to the duration and intensity of the symptoms.
Symptoms of gloom
The main characteristic of gloom is a persistent sad or down feeling. You experience less enjoyment in normal daily activities. You may not feel like going to work, studying, exercising or meeting friends, and it may feel as if nothing can cheer you up.
When you feel gloomy, you may experience a combination of the following symptoms:
- Feeling sad or down
- Negative thoughts or excessive worrying
- Noticeably less pleasure or interest in activities
- Concentration or memory problems
- Being more irritable or sensitive than usual
- Changes in appetite, such as eating too much or too little
- Changes in sleep pattern, sleeping too little or too much
- Fatigue and lack of energy
- Physical complaints such as headaches, stomach aches or muscle pain
Treatment of gloom
If you experience mild or moderate gloom, it may sometimes improve with the support of family and friends. If this does not help enough, it is wise to seek psychological support.
Do not feel ashamed of sad or gloomy feelings. Unfortunately many people wait too long before seeking help. There is often pressure to live a perfect life, to perform well and to appear happy. Because of this, people sometimes try to hide their symptoms for a long time, which can actually make the situation worse.
It is therefore important to seek help in time. Just like with physical complaints, treatment can become more difficult if you wait too long, and the duration of treatment may increase.
Gloom is generally treatable. During treatment we explore the causes of your sadness, the symptoms you experience and how these affect your daily life. The goal is to help you regain energy and rediscover enjoyment in life.
Therapy can also help when sadness is related to a major life event that is difficult to cope with, such as the death of a loved one, a divorce or the loss of a job.
