About loss and mourning
When people think of loss and mourning, they often think about the death of a loved one. However, there are many situations in which you can lose something that was important to you. For example the end of a relationship, the loss of a job or the unfulfilled wish to have a child. Everyone knows that loss is part of life, but when it happens to you, it can be difficult to know how to deal with it.
The consequences of loss
The way you cope with mourning depends on several factors, such as your age, how prepared you were for the loss, your personal resilience and the support you receive from people around you. In most cases mourning is an intense and often long process.
During this period mourning can require a great deal of energy and attention. Both emotional and physical reactions can occur, for example:
- Sleep problems and reduced appetite
- Fatigue and lack of energy
- Restlessness, palpitations or chest pain
- Feelings of guilt, anger or despair
- Gloom and sadness
In all cases you have to learn to cope with the loss. This is rarely easy. In many situations people gradually find a way to continue their lives with the support of family and friends. However, sometimes it becomes difficult to return to normal life. You may experience problems in your relationships or at work.
If the loss begins to control your life and the burden becomes too heavy, it may be helpful to seek professional guidance.
Treatment of loss and mourning
Losing someone or something can sometimes be so emotional and overwhelming that it becomes difficult to go through the mourning process alone. In such situations, even the support of family and friends may not be enough to help you move forward.
Therapeutic guidance focuses on helping you give the loss a place in your daily life. Together we look at the direct and indirect consequences of the loss and explore practical ways to help you move forward and regain balance in your life.
