About running therapy
Running therapy is the therapeutic use of running (or walking) for your mental health, under the supervision of a therapist.
Running therapy is often part of a multidisciplinary treatment. It is possible to combine running therapy with sessions with a (GZ) psychologist, creative therapist or body-oriented / massage therapist. If necessary, consultation with your doctor or physiotherapist is possible.
Running therapy is suitable for the following (mental) health issues:
- Mood disorders (gloom or mild depression)
- Anxiety and panic attacks and phobia
- Unexplained physical problems
- Stress or burnout
- Bad condition due to overweight
- Listlessness
- Discomfort
- Low self-esteem/ lack of self-confidence
- Insomnia
- Aggression / impulsivity
- Addiction
- Hyperactivity
- Sexual problems
Running therapy can also be used for a reintegration process or finding a better balance between work (exertion, sports, work) and rest (recovery and relaxation). If you are unsure whether running therapy is suitable for you, you can contact your doctor.
Improving overall condition
As soon as you start running (or walking), your body starts to move, but also your overall condition improves, such as:
- Less gloomy or anxious feelings
- More peace in your mind and / or body
- A more positive self-image
- More joy of life
- A sense of satisfaction
- Improvement of your fitness
- A better night’s sleep
- Cheerful and pleasant feelings
- More active lifestyle
- Better body awareness
- Moreover, you walk outdoors and learn to enjoy the four seasons!
Purpose of running therapy
The purpose of running therapy is to learn skills, allowing you to run (or walk) independently 30-60 minutes preferably 3-4 times a week. In the beginning, the running (or walking) sessions will be individually with the therapist. Later you can run (or walk) in a group, or individually.
Running therapy can be a good preparation for a membership with a sports association. I
It is important to know that running therapy can also be performed at walking pace and that therapeutic conversations during running or walking are not always necessary.
