A negative self-image (also called low self-esteem or inferiority complex) can cause a lot of trouble. A negative self-image makes you vulnerable, insecure and is bad for your self-esteem and your self-confidence. It can lead to all kinds of other symptoms, such as gloominess, anxieties, eating problems and physical symptoms (stomach ache, headache, etc.).

During the treatment we will discuss how your low self-esteem affects your daily life and what you would like to change. The goal is to break the vicious circle and ensure that you have less negative thoughts about yourself. In addition, we analyse your positive qualities, how you can obtain a better insight of which things are going well, so that your sense of self-confidence and self-esteem can grow.

Therapies for insecurity and low self-esteem

A psychologist can apply different forms of therapy during the conversations. The most commonly used therapy for insecurity and negative self-image is cognitive behavioral therapy.

Cognitive behavioral therapy focuses on changing (unrealistic) negative thinking and behavioral patterns that maintain your insecurity and low self-esteem. You will learn how to break through these unhealthy patterns and change them into more realistic and positive thoughts and beliefs about yourself.

If the low self-esteem was caused by a negative or hurtful experience in the past, EMDR can be a solution. EMDR helps you to process your bad memories. EMDR does not stand alone, but is usually used to support treatment.

ACT (Acceptance and Commitment) therapy is a form of behavioral therapy and helps you live a valuable life. You learn to deal with negative thoughts and feelings and how to overcome mental obstacles. We help you to break free from your low self-esteem and focus your attention on what is really important to you in life.

Running therapy, in which you regularly walk or run under the guidance of a psychologist, can provide support for a negative self-image. Regular exercise is good for your health, but it also makes you feel better. You feel fitter, stronger and you gain more self-confidence.

It is possible that one form of therapy is used, but a combination of different types of therapy is also a good option. At the start of the treatment process, you discuss with your therapist which form of therapy is best for you and your symptoms, and what feels comfortable for you. In this way, the treatment is tailor-made, so that you feel seen, heard and helped by us.
